Great Gatsbys Report :: essays research papers
CHAPTER 1: Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota who recently moved to New York to learn about the bond business, opens his story by describing himself. He is tolerant, slow to judge, and a good listener. As a result, people tend to share their secrets with him, including someone named Gatsby. Gatsby, Nick says, had a beautiful dream, but the people surrounding him ruined that dream. Nick is so disgusted with these people and their New York lifestyle that he has left New York and returned to Minnesota. In the summer of 1922, however, Nick had just arrived in New York and rented a house on a part of Long Island called West Egg. Unlike the conservative, aristocratic East Egg, West Egg is home to the "new rich," those who, having made their fortunes recently, have neither the social connections nor the refinement to move among the East Egg set. West Egg is characterized by lavish displays of wealth and garish poor taste. Nick's West Egg house is next to Gatsby's mansion, a sprawling Gothic monstrosity. Nick is unlike his West Egg neighbors--he graduated from Yale and has social connections on East Egg. One night, he drives out to East Egg to have dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan, a former member of Nick's social club at Yale. Tom, a powerful figure dressed in riding clothes, meets Nick on the porch. Inside, Daisy lounges on a couch with her friend Jordan Baker, a competitive golfer who yawns as though bored by her surroundings. Tom tries to interest the others in a racist book called The Rise of the Colored Empires, by a man named Goddard. Daisy teases Tom about the book, but is interrupted when Tom leaves the room to take a phone call. Daisy follows him, and Jordan tells Nick that the call is from Tom's lover in New York. After an awkward dinner, the party breaks up; Jordan wants to go to bed because she has a golf tournament the next day. As Nick leaves, Tom and Daisy hint that they would like him to take a romantic interest in Jordan. When Nick arrives home, he sees Gatsby for the first time, standing on the lawn with his arms reaching out toward the dark water. Nick looks out at the water, but all he can see is a distant green light that might mark the end of a dock.

The Human Rights Act
Amy has dementia and lives in a residential home. In the mornings Amy has always been able to get out of bed and get dressed with some minimal support and then walk independently down to the dining area where she has chosen to have breakfast. Over the past week Amy has been staying in bed longer and longer; she is reluctant to get up in the morning and does not do very much for herself when getting dressed. Her mobility has reduced also and she has started to get pressure sores. Amyââ¬â¢s appetite has also become very poor and she usually only eats a few spoonfulââ¬â¢s of her food. When carers encourage her to eat more she refuses. The Human Rights actThe human rights act is there to protect people, young, old, rich and poor. They give people the right to freedom of speech, right of freedom, privacy and to be equally treated (not discriminated). This links to Amy because with Amy having dementia she may do certain things that are not appropriate. An example could be when she goe s to the toilet she decide not to close the door and leave it wide open for people see inside. As one of her care workers it would be my duty to try my best to close the door. As much as Amy may protest it is part of my job to protect Amyââ¬â¢s privacy and dignity. The Mental Capacity actThe mental capacity act has been put into place to make it possible for adults who are unable to make decisions for them to be able to make certain decisions for themselves. ââ¬ËUnder the Mental Capacity Act a person is presumed to make their own decisions ââ¬Å"unless all practical steps to help them make a decision have been taken without successâ⬠.ââ¬â¢ This would link into Amy when she decisions for example if she decides she wants to live on her own for the rest of her life. At some point in this decision there will be a problem financially and providing a one to one carer for the whole of the day and night.Putting people first FrameworkPutting people first was put in place to out line responsibilities of care workers when working with dementia. Some of the responsibilities include; making sure the patient has taken any medication they need to take, ensuring they have had something to eat and drink throughout the day. It is very easy for somebody with dementia to become anorexic or obese because their short term memory can make them forget that they have had nothing to eat or in the opposite way that they have already had their something. This framework will help Amy because it would be their care workers responsibility to make sure they have had breakfast and write it down if she has or not for the next care worker who may be a part of her team because then they cannot just assume Amy has had something to eat or not. There are many different types of roles and responsibilities that come with being a care worker for somebody with dementia. The care worker has to promote dignity for the service user. Respect them and give them independence, their rights and pri vacy.Again giving them privacy could just be by closing their toilet door so nobody can see them when on the toilet. Focusing on strengths and the things they have the ability to do. For example when lied in bed if they canââ¬â¢t sit up to help themselves out of bed, rather than saying ââ¬Ëyou know you canââ¬â¢t do that on your own, you donââ¬â¢t need any helpââ¬â¢ ask them ââ¬Ëdo you want some help? Iââ¬â¢ll help you up, you swing your legs out of bed then you can get upââ¬â¢. By focusing on the things they can do youââ¬â¢ll be helping to promote their independence to do something else.Involving their friends and family is another responsibility to a care worker to help the individual interact with family member and friends. This could just be by taking the service user for a walk to the park on a nice day with one of their friends. Giving them the chance to get some fresh air and interact with friends. Acting in the best interest of the individual. This c ould be just by when you do take them for a walk by making sure you use a pedestrian crossing rather than just crossing the road because there are no cars coming down the road. This links into the case study with Amy for because in the case study it says ââ¬Ëshe is reluctant to get to get up in the morning and does not do very much for herself when getting dressed.ââ¬â¢ As well as promoting her independence, when giving her the opportunity to interact with friends and family your giving her a reason to want to get up in the morning. The job role of a care worker is mainly working within a team and not as an individual. For example if a service user has 3 or 4 different care workers throughout the day, the care workers would communicate in a diary by saying when the service user has had their breakfast and what time they took their medication. They may also promote their independence by using a tablet box. This would work because in the diary the first care worker could say â⠬ËAnn took her first tablet at 9 oââ¬â¢clock, she is next due to take her tablet 4 hours later which will be 1 oââ¬â¢clock, give her the tablet box and tell her she needs to take tablet 2ââ¬â¢.By doing this youââ¬â¢re giving Amy as the service user independence to take the tablet herself your just supporting her by telling her when to take it. This would help to improve the service userââ¬â¢s health because it means all their tablets will be taken at the right time. Also having the professionals work as a team writing different things into the diary such as what time they had their breakfast and what they had will help to minimise chances for obesity. This will help Amy by trying to keep her health and fitness levels balanced. This will also help because each different professional will also know what they had and if they had something unhealthy such as fried bacon and egg on toast, the next professional may say ââ¬Ëright ok you had fried foods for breakfast lets h ave something healthy for dinner such as a tuna pasta salad or a chicken and salad pita bread with a Muller light yoghurt. By doing this they are getting more of a balanced diet. They could also write in the amount of exercise the service user has had from going for a 20 minute walk with the dog, a half an hour game on the Nintendo Wii.There are many different approaches to dementia care and all the different approaches can have their own effect to Amy as the service user. For example in the case study it says ââ¬ËAmy has always been able to get out of bed and get dressed with minimal supportââ¬â¢ then it says ââ¬Ëover the past week Amy has been staying in bed longer and longer; she is reluctant to get up in the morning and does not do very much for herself when getting dressed.ââ¬â¢ There are different approaches to how the care worker could work with this problem. If the care worker decides to help them get up by physicallyà helping them, lifting them up and swinging their legs around to get them up and then get them dressed there could be quite a few possible outcomes with strengths and weaknesses of their own. One strength of this approach could be how Amy will then be up and ready for the day ahead. However a weakness to this approach could be how Amy has not done anything within the process. Another weakness to this approach could be how Amy may now expect to get this help every morning, because she has had full help and not had to do anything independently. A different approach to how the care worker could work with this problem could be by helping her with minimal help like usual.Saying to Amy ââ¬Ëcome on Amy, Iââ¬â¢ll help you sit up, you swing your legs around if you can.ââ¬â¢ Once Amy is up by then helping her get ready rather than just getting her ready. A strength to this approach could be how Amy will of managed to get herself with minimal support just like n a regular day. A weakness to this approach could be pain Amy may f eel when swinging her legs out of bed to get up.ââ¬â¢ However another strength to this approach is how Amy has still had her independence promoted because she has still been able to do things for herself when getting ready. Therefore no matter what approach the care worker uses to encourage Amy to get up and get ready there will be strengths and weaknesses and effects to her. Whether or not they be good or bad effects.

Aretaeus of Cappadocia began detailing symptoms of the bipolar disorder as early as the first century. The ancient Greek and Romans discovered that using lithium salts in baths calmed manic people and lifted spirits of people who were depressed. Later in the same century, Theophilus Bonet published, Sepuchretum, that drew from his experience performing 3,000 autopsies. In his work, he linked mania and melancholy in a condition that he called manico-melancolicus. French psychiatrist, Jean Falret, published an article describing what he called la folie circulaire, which translates to circular insanity. The article details people switching through severedepressionand excitement and is considered to be the first diagnosis of bipolar disorder. He also noticed that there was a genetic connection in the bipolar disorder. Medical professionals still support this to this day. Emil Kraepelin, a German psychiatrist, changed the history of bipolar disorder when he broke away from Sigmund Freuds theory that society and the suppression of desires played a large role in mental illness. He had recognized biological causes of mental illness and was believed to be the first person to study mental illness seriously. Prevalence and Biological Relationship of Psychological Disorder: Britney noticed she was bipolar when she became very angry at random times. Spears was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after she was hospitalized from getting very angry at her significant other. Britney was very understanding when they told her she was bipolar and needed to be prescribed medication, but at the same time, she didnt want to believe what the doctor was telling her. Spears had said I become a different person. literally! After she had suffered from a public breakdown in 2007, she has felt very alienated from the public. Cultural Perspective: Culture aspects of bipolar disorder are ways people are shaped by their surroundings. People react to this disorder in many different ways, such as anger. Some people may think the way they react is embarrassing or they might get judged by their actions. This mental illness affects people in different cultures all over the world. There are regions of the planet, and cultural islands, where the bipolar disorder is less common or severe. Scientists did a study and reported the seafood consumption levels and rates of bipolar illness in nine countries. This study showed the lowest rates of the bipolar disorder occurred within the countries that had the highest level of fish consumption. This is because fish are rich in the omega-three fatty acids. Some of the countries that were included were, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Korea, and Iceland. Symptoms: Symptoms of bipolar disorder such as mood swings, sadness, anger, anxiety, guilt, hopelessness, or loss of interest. Britneys symptoms are more like anger, anxiety, and mood swings. Britney also has depression, trouble falling asleep, and restlessness. Mood swing symptoms are when youre happy one minute, and within the next minute you are angry and upset. As the loss of interest symptom occurs you just lose interest in anything happening and you dont want to interact with anyone or anything. Symptoms of the bipolar disorder usually occur when people get angry or have severe anxiety. Treatments: Bipolar disorder can be controlled but cannot be cured. Some treatments for the bipolar disorder are therapies, supportive care, specialists, and medications such as anticonvulsant, antipsychotic, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Britney chooses therapies to try and cure her bipolar disorder, she goes and talks to a therapist about her disorder to help maintain it. Britney is also prescribed to medication by her doctor when she was hospitalized. Britneys bipolar disorder gets the best treatment by visiting her therapist once every week. The least effective treatment for the bipolar disorder is more likely to be the specialists, Britney doesnt like the care providers having to watch every move she makes. Britney says she would rather go and talk to the therapist instead of someone coming to watch every move she makes. Societal Perspectives: I think there should be a cure for bipolar disorder so people dont have to worry about every move they make and if its going to trigger the mental health issue they have. I also agree with Britney by getting good treatment by going to a therapist and taking the prescribed medicine the doctor has given her. I think our society has taken responsibility for the treatments for Britney Spears bipolar disorder. Also, our society has found ways to treat the bipolar disorder to calm it down. They have yet to find a way to completely cure it, but for now, they found a way to maintain it. Conclusion: Spears is now able to somewhat control her disorder. She still continues to go to therapy and still continues on her medications. Britney is now able to be with her children, now that she controls her bipolar disorder. Spears speaks out to people about her disorder, because she wants people to understand what she went through and how she found a way to control herself and her disorder.

Irony, the incongruities between the expected and actual results of events and humor, the quality of being laughably ludicrous are interweaved in this story. In the short story, The Drunkard Frank OConnor uses tlrst person point ot view to reveal the humor and irony that is created in this musing story. Humor is seen many times In the story after Larry and his father Mick reach the bar following the funeral. Larry is thirsty and takes a drink of his fathers beer. Larry finishes his fathers drink and becomes drunk afterwards. While this Is occurring his father is talking away with a man named Peter Crowley who is also a drinker. When Mick realizes Larry is drunk he knows he must take him home immediately. This scene is described as, They all stopped gabbling to gape at the strange spectacle of two sober men, middle aged men bringing home a drunken mall boy with a cut over his This could not be better told than through the eyes of Larry who at the time is observing all he sees happening around him. Two usually drunk men carrying home but a young boy who Is not sobers enough to walk. This humorous scene described by the main character reveals more enjoyment because little Larry is the one who is drunk. It is also a bit ironic that the two grown men are carrying a drunken young boy home and it Is not the other way around. Larry is watching all the people around him and knows how ridiculous he must look In between the arms of his father adepter Crowley. The humor Is revealed in an entertaining way from the first person point of view because of the situation the main character is in and how he is describing it. t Of2 Irony seems to occur In a Tew Instances since Larry Is settlng up tne reader wltn certain expectations. Larry tells us how his father is and knows exactly what will happen after the funeral. His father will wind up in a bar drunk like he had been described doing since his best friend passed away. Larrys first conclusion about the circumstances that are likely to occur is, l know I might have to bring him home, blink runk, down Blarney Lane, with all the old women at their doors, saying: Mick Delaney is on it again (302). This is Larrys prediction to how the day would end up. To the readers hilarious surprise, this is not what happens. Larrys thirst at the bar gets him in to an unusual situation and bewilderment from the liquor he has drunk. Larry as he realizes he is drunk says to himself, But, drunk and all as I was (301). both the Larry and the reader are surprised by this ironic event. Larrys prediction is reversed. He no longer has to take his drunken father home down Blarney Lane. Now Larrys father has to take Larry home blind drunk. The twist of events that Larry the main character is going through mainly reveals the irony also in a more humorous way. Humor through the eyes and words of Larry, the main character, provide the reader with more enjoyment as his day continues. As the men carry Larry by the arms he knows he is going to stroll down Blarney Lane drunk. So as Larry is proceeding down the lane he cries out to the women laughing, Ill make ye laugh at the other side of year faces if ye dont let me pass Go away ye bloody bitches Take care or Ill come back and show ye! (302). this scene described by Larry is very comical. He knows he father usually passes down this same lane drunk but does not get to realize what it is like until now. Its especially worse for Larry because he is not a grown man yet who is allowed to drink. It is ironic also because Larry never thought hed be the one walking down this lane drunk after the funeral. The humor being revealed is more amusing through the words of Larry who is telling the story from the first person point of view.
